American Cancer Society’s "Hip" Cowford Ball a Success Jacksonville, FL (October 30, 2006) – More than 500 American Cancer Society supporters put on their boots, and in some cases their afro-wigs and bell-bottom pants, to raise money during the 12th Annual Cowford Ball – presented by Memorial Hospital -- that took place at the River City Brewing Company on Saturday, October 21. This year’s theme, Hippie-Cow-Yea, brought out some great costumes and some good donations, said Linda Goldstein, co-chair of the gala team. "We had a groovy time for a great cause and the committee volunteers did a great job with decorations," she said. "The auctions were very successful fundraisers, and our first stick cow race was big hit. Party on the Moon, the Atlanta band that performed that night, really put on a good show and kept our guests on the floor until after midnight." Strawberry Fields Forever Desserts, the Funkadelic Corner and the Big Chill Ice Sculpture were a few of the food stations at the sixties-themed Cowford Ball – where go-go dancers and a D-J greeted guests at the entrance. The Cowford Ball is one of the largest annual fundraisers for the American Cancer Society’s Duval Unit and has raised more than $4.8 million for the Duval Unit over the 12 years it has been held in Jacksonville. About 5,500 First Coast residents are diagnosed with cancer each year. The money raised through events like the Cowford Ball supports research, prevention, detection and patient services in the Jacksonville area."
